Business Need: New Business Start-Up
Sterling Vines is a wine distributor that was established to take advantage of growth in the wine markets in emerging countries. The company required a comprehensive strategy for long-term success given the competitiveness of the wine industry in Australia and worldwide.
Business Solution: Effective Business Plan & Guidance
Inveiss consultants assisted in the formulation of strategic business plan on market positioning, key differentiation, sales & marketing strategies, and so on.
It was determined that Asia would be the ideal point of entry where emerging markets were concerned. In this regard, Malaysia was chosen as the jurisdiction for establishing a distribution centre given its proximity to the rest of South East Asia and the fact that the ASEAN free trade zone could be made use of.
Further, statistics obtained from the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation (AWBC) showed that the Malaysian market itself was just burgeoning despite it being a Muslim country and as the market developed, it would start off with less expensive new world wines and progressed to more sophisticated palette. The room for growth was extraordinary.
For the duration of the consultation (12 months), reviews of the strategic business plan was made on a monthly basis to fine-tune each step to be taken.
Unexpected difficulties were encountered in the form of additional Malaysian duties which were imposed on the wines due to some wines exceeding a certain percentage of alcohol. This resulted in a higher cost price on the wines, and a higher selling price. Unfortunately the effect was that such wines were no longer suitable for the low-medium end retail trade. The management team decided that another mode of distribution of the wines was required and a focus on direct trade through wine shows, hotels and event organisers was determined.
The strategic business plan was highly effective in gaining a rapid distribution and customer base for the company and year-on-year growth of Sterling Vines reached its target of 50% for its first 3 years of operations.
